On August 23, 2022, members of the Houston Police Department responded to a call for service involving an armed man who had a woman hostage. This is the full critical incident report of that call.

The above video is the full critical incident report of a kidnapping/hostage situation that was handled by the Houston Police Department on August 23, 2022. The suspect, 52-year-old Melvin Porter, had taken a woman hostage at gunpoint and refused to release her unless his ex-girlfriend agreed to exchange herself for the woman, who was her employee. The ex-girlfriend agreed to the exchange, and was being held at gunpoint by Porter when HPD arrived in unmarked vehicles.

Upon attempting to make contact with Porter, HPD officers reported that Porter aimed his weapon at the officers, prompting them to open fire in defense of themselves and the hostage.

Porter was reported deceased at the scene in spite of attempts by law enforcement officers at providing him with life-saving aid. None of the involved officers or the hostage were injured in the gunfight.
