(NSFW) World's Calmest Cop Shoots Suspect Charging with Knife

Body Worn Camera footage provided by the Modesto Police Department captures the moment that 35-year-old Dylan Harvey attempted to stab one of their officers.

On July 4, 2022, Officers Jacob Mertz and Mike Harmon were dispatched to the 1100 Block of Roselawn Avenue to investigate a disturbance. Upon arriving to the scene, the officers discovered 35-year-old Dylan Harvey and his father at the residence. According to Harvey's father, he had locked himself in his room with a number of knives and was threatening his father with them. After almost a half an hour of contact with Harvey, Officer Mertz was finally able to get the man to allow him into the room where they continued to the conversation that they were having.

Upon trying to get Harvey to exit the room with the knives Harvey visibly becomes agitated. The officers knew that they were dealing with a man going through a mental crisis, and they were attempting to separate him from any weapons that could cause harm to either himself, the responding officers, or others that were present at the scene of the investigation. During the attempt, Harvey's agitation reaches a climax and he reaches for a knife and attempt to charge the Officer Mertz, cutting him in the process.

Mertz responds immediately by pushing Harvey back and firing two shots, shooting him once in the hand and once in the jaw. In spite of the situation, Mertz remains perfectly calm and immediately moves to render life saving aid, calling the second officer in to get assistance.

Due to the follow on actions of Officers Mertz and Harmon, Harvey's life would end up being saved. He is currently in the hospital being treated for his injuries. He is being charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, however it's unclear if those charges will stick due to the fact that Harvey suffers from several serious diagnosed mental disorders.
