Shahed Drone Intercepted Over Odessa

A Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile (system unknown) intercepts a Russian Shahed drone over Odessa. This incident is a reminder of the persistent air campaign and of financial challenge that drones present to the defender. In this case, the Ukrainian defenders easily intercepted the drone, thus protecting Odessa’s critical maritime infrastructure, but the replacement cost of the intercepting missile is much higher than that the Shahed, creating an unsustainable paradigm. Israel finds itself in a similar situation as Iron Dome fires expensive missiles at cheaply produced Hamas rockets. As drone warfare continues to evolve belligerents will need to develop a sustainable antidote to cheap drones, such as a modernized Gepard or a resurrected LAV-AD.
