(NSFW) Suspect Rushes LAPD With Fork, Tries To Take Weapon, Gets Shot

This compilation of bodycam and security footage provided by LAPD records their response to a call for "assault with a deadly weapon." The suspect's actions prompt LAPD to use deadly force, and therefore viewer discretion is advised.

This is one of those calls that seems excessive until it's actually seen. On February 3, 2024, LAPD Officers responded to a call for service regarding "assault with a deadly weapon." The caller who initially reached dispatch stated that the suspect was threatening warehouse employees with a stick, but within the warehouse had access to several sharp or otherwise dangerous items.

As the video begins, we see a team of seven officers making contact with the suspect, 36-year-old Jason Maccani. Note the third officer in the stack, with the beanbag shotgun. Although initially compliant, Maccani turns and charges the officers. At 0:28 he closes on the shotgun-wielding officer with an object held in an icepick-style grip, and grabs the barrel of the shotgun, at which point he is shot. Ten seconds later, at 0:38, he is placed in a prone position.

The video then switches to bodycam footage of the incident. The bodycam even more clearly shows the suspect charging with an object in his hand and reaching for the officer's weapon. At 02:12, some of the medical aid that was rendered is shown, but Maccani was pronounced dead at a local hospital after transport. The object with which he charged the officers was determined to be a white plastic fork, from which one officer suffered minor injuries. No other officers or persons were injured, despite so many people being so close together.
