More footage from the Bakhmut prisoner swap revealed that the body of a dead American was among the exchange. The fallen American is likely Nicholas Maimer, a retired "Green Beret" US Army Special Forces soldier who reportedly died in Bakhmut when a Russian artillery barrage collapsed the building he was using as a fighting position. Maimer died some time in mid May 2023.

Maimer, an Idahoan, had originally travelled to Ukraine in 2022 and was reportedly providing unspecified "training" to Ukrainians.
