Russian A-50U Military Plane Shot Down By Ukrainian Patriot System

This compilation of civilian-captured footage records what appears to be a Russian A-50 AWACS aircraft (NATO Identifier: “Mainstay”) as it is shot down by a US-donated “Patriot” air defense system. The footage also includes what appears to be the aftermath. (Author edit: This was later confirmed to have been an S200 missile system, and not a Patriot)

Built on the Ilyushin IL-76 transport platform, the A-50U has been in service since 1985. With a 620-mile (1000 km) flight range and radar detection range of 400 miles (650 km), the aircraft serves as an airborne early warning and control system, responsible for controlling up to 10 fighters.

Official Ukrainian sources report that this shoot down occurred on 23 February 2024, over Krasnodar Krai, at 18:44. This is the second A-50 to be downed since the hostilities began in 2022, both of which having occurred in 2024.
