Deputy's Ballistic Vest Stops Point Blank Shot And Saves His Life

The Jones County Sheriff's Office has released body camera and dashcam footage from a critical incident showing the moments a deputy was shot at point blank range and his ballistic vest prevented it from causing lethal damage.

On January 23rd, 2022, Deputy John Kile observed a vehicle driving erratically on Highway 11. During the traffic stop, the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Zachary Lucas Olivar, refused to comply with the deputy by not stepping out of the vehicle and ignoring commands. As shown from both perspectives, Olivar made a sudden motion, where he drew a firearm and shot deputy Kile directly in the chest.

After shooting deputy Kile, Olivar proceeded to flee the scene, causing a high-speed vehicle chase. Despite being shot, deputy Kile continued his pursuit on Olivar until addition units arrived in the area. Eventually, Olivar's vehicle was disabled after the utilization of spike strips and an effective pit maneuver.

Olivar is being held at the Jones County jail without bond and is facing aggravated assault charges. After the arrest, Deputy Kile was transported to the Medical Center, Atrium Health Navicent, where he was treated and released.
