Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Flees Country, Kabul Falls To Taliban

Published Aug. 15, 2021

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has fled the country aboard a jet destined for Tajikistan as Taliban forces have fully encircled and entered Kabul. Footage shows the fleeing leader and his secretary hastily board an aircraft amid a scant crowd bidding him farewell

Al Jazeera posted footage of Taliban militants leisurely strolling through the conquered presidential palace as they jovially pose for photos at the vacated presidential desk.

The US Embassy in Kabul is still in the process of carrying out the emergency evacuation as smoke plumes from the grounds, indicating the destruction of documents and equipment. The embassy released a statement on social media, "We have conveyed to the Taliban reps in Doha that any action on their part that puts US personnel or our mission at risk will be met with a swift & strong Department of Defense response.

The Taliban claimed that official international personnel and facilities are not under threat. “There is no danger from our side to embassies and diplomats. We won't target any embassy or diplomat." Meanwhile, Russia announced it will not be closing it's Kabul embassy and will be conducting daily business as usual.
