"Top Down" Attack Destroys Russian Tank In Ukraine

The Ukrainian armed forces released a video they claim shows the destruction of a Russian tank in an operation carried out by Ukraine's 25th Airborne Brigade.

When slowed down, the high angle of the munition can be seen, indicating a deadly "top-down" attack, most likely from an FGM-148 Javelin or NLAW missile system. The top-down attack approach allows a munition to hit the target vehicle where the armor is the weakest.

Leading up to the invasion, Russia outfitted several of its combat vehicles with "cope cages," an overhead umbrella constructions intended to detonate incoming projectiles early, giving the vehicle more standoff distance and exhausting the munitions penetration capability before it reaches the vehicle itself. Based on the extensive wreckage aftermath photos from the Ukrainian battlefield, the cope cages appear to be ineffective.
