That Time a Russian Police Unit Spearheaded an Attack on Kyiv by Accident

Freshly released footage from the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war shows the burning hulks of a Russian SOBR Spetsnaz unit that accidentally attacked Kyiv all by themselves on the second day of the war.

On the morning of February 25, 2022 at approximately 8:00 am, 80 Kemerovo OMON and SOBR officers, in a caravan of three KamAZ 6×6 armored vehicles, an olive-drab GAZ-66 4×4 truck, a Tigr all-terrain vehicle, and a BTR armored personnel carrier, conducted a vehicle movement in the direction of Kyiv. They were initially the rear echelon of a military convoy that was supposed to me moving on Kyiv, but at some point (and no one knows how) the police unit ended up separated and lost in Ukraine.

According to some of the survivors of this convoy who were taken as prisoners of war, their only orders from higher command was to "go to Kyiv and we’ll tell you when you get there." Along the route, there was no rally points established for the convoy in which they could regroup and get follow on information. The unit also lacked the proper tools to intercommunicate with Russian military forces, and as a result had no information about Russian military hang-ups in other parts of the country that were preventing them from being able to continue their mission towards Kyiv.

Unfortunately for the SOBR, so confident they were in Russia's ability to quickly overwhelm Russian forces that they just continued towards Kyiv without stopping. As a result, they ended up far ahead of Russian forces and far behind enemy lines. This resulted in the total destruction of the Russian convoy as well as near a 100% casualty rate for the unit. Out of the 80 Spetsnaz policemen who were tasked with conducting riot control and counter-terror operations inside of Kyiv after the Russian takeover, only three survived. Those three men were among the first prisoners of war in the still on-going Russia-Ukraine war.
