This footage, released unclassified July 05, 2023, depicts Russian Su-35 planes (NATO Designator Flanker-E) deliberately flying in an unsafe manner and creating hazardous conditions for American MQ-9 drones operating in Syria.

In addition to flying too closely to the American aircraft, a Russian pilot engages his afterburner just ahead of a drone. The resultant change of airspeed and pressure make it more difficult for the MQ-9 operator to properly control the aircraft. At 0:37, we see the Russian aircraft deploying parachuted flares in the drones’ immediate flight path, creating obstacles through which the American pilots had to take evasive maneuvers.

These unsafe and unprofessional actions are reminiscent of the incident in March of 2023, where Russian pilots exhibited similar behavior, including intentionally dumping fuel on a drone. In that incident, a Russian plane struck the drone, resulting in its crashing. While no crashes or damage were reported in the July 05 encounter, a disturbing trend of provocation is continuing to be established by Russian air assets in Syria.
