Whereas clips of this incident are available elsewhere, this agency-provided video from Scottsdale, Arizona’s police department shows this recent hostage rescue in its entirety, including voice-over from Scottsdale’s Public Engagement Section Sergeant Allison Sempsis and diagrams depicting the locations of responding officers and the suspects. An adult male was taken hostage by two suspects and held in a black van. When detectives blocked the vehicle in, one of the suspects left the other, 45-year-old Rene Calderon, with the hostage. Calderon, in possession of body armor and several weapons, opened fire on the detectives and changed weapons, presumably in lieu of reloading. Calderon was killed in the gunfight while one detective suffered a non-life-threatening injury. The other suspect, 43-year-old Wyatt Edge, was arrested shortly thereafter.
