Officer body camera footage released from the Miami Police Department, shows a deadly officer involved shooting that occurred on March 8th, 2022.
At approximately 4:40 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by 34-year-old Antwon Cooper, just outside the Miami Northwest Senior High School. Shortly after the confrontation began, officers asked Mr. Cooper to exit the vehicle due to a failure to provide identification. As shown in the body camera footage, the officer began patting Mr. Cooper down, where suddenly, a struggle began.
During the struggle, a Sergeant observed a firearm located on Mr. Cooper's person. In response to the hostile situation, the Sergeant discharged his firearm a single time, striking Mr. Cooper in the head, and fatally wounding him.
Since the incident, a wrongful death lawsuit has been established. The attorney handling the case, Rawsi Williams, released a statement saying ,"He was shot in the head with another officer right there and Mr. Cooper was not brandishing a weapon. Mr. Cooper was not holding a weapon. Mr. Cooper was not attacking an officer and that sergeant used lethal force".
