On April 21, 2021 Escondido Police Department Communications Center received a call at around 7:00 a.m. describing an older white male hitting cars with a metal pole.

Officer Chad Moore was the first responding Officer to locate and approach the suspect who was later identified as 59-year-old Steven Olson. Officer Moore confronted Olson and immediately warned him to drop the weapon and to take a seat.

Olson refusing to comply, began meandering around the area when Officer Moore would locate him for the second time about a block away. Shortly after Officer Moore exited his cruiser, Olson began moving toward him with his weapon still in hand. Officer Moore drew his firearm and continued to warn Olson by stating "Drop the weapon or you're gonna get shot". Olson responded by saying "I know and you're gonna get hit".

After threating Officer Moore, Olson continued advancing with the weapon. Moments later Officer Moore fired multiple shots, stopping Olson from continuing his advancement.

Olson was treated on the scene until medical transport arrived but was later pronounced dead.
