The Real Reason We Do Operational Risk Management Paperwork

I have to label this video somewhere between humor and combat, because it's really bad training conducted in a miserable environment where there's lots of ways someone can die.


In third-world militaries, there's this prevailing idea that you can beat the fear out of someone by shooting at them. This is simply not true. If I told you that six months from now I was going to kick you in the nuts as hard as I can, would you spend the next six months letting someone kick you in the nuts every day at varying degrees of strength to try and immunize yourself to the pain I intend to inflict on you? Probably not, because at the end of the day getting kicked in the nuts is still getting kicked in the nuts. It doesn't matter how many times it has happened to you in the past, it's still going to suck.


There's also an idea going around that you can desensitize yourself to stress with this kind of training. That's also not true. If you have two paratroopers getting ready to do a combat jump, one who's never done a combat jump before, and another who's done hundreds of combat jumps, they're going to show the same stressed vitals. The only real difference is that the paratrooper with hundreds of combat jumps knows what to expect, so he puts on a different face. You don't desensitize yourself to stress by inducing it, you only better learn how to cope with it. There's no reason to risk your life for that coping mechanism which your body will naturally develop over time anyways.


This video right here is the reason your XO needs to fill out ORM paperwork before every range. This style of training is antiquated, and frankly stupid.
