Yesterday we published this video showing Ukrainian forces using CS gas against Russian forces in order to smoke them out of their fighting position. Today, this video of Russians using the same CS cannisters has surfaced, which is just as much of a Geneva Convention violation..

Here's the thing, I got to see both of these videos in a vacuum. When the Ukrainians did it, it was no big deal. Everyone was applauding and laughing at the Russians running from their fighting position. Now that the Russians are on camera doing it though, it's suddenly a war crime again. A direct violation of the Geneva Convention. NATO should give Ukraine Sarin Nerve Agents so they can protect themselves. How dare the Russians violate the 1925 Geneva Convention Protocol for the Prohibition of the Use in War of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases, and of Bacteriological Methods of Warfare.

Regardless of that, there's a reason CS gas is banned during war under the Geneva Convention but not against protesters in riot scenarios. You see, rioters aren't going to mistake CS gas as Chlorine Gas or Mustard Gas due to the fog of war. They're also not going to respond by launching nerve agents and weaponized Ebola at the riot police.

Once MOPP suits get put on, they don't come off. Once MOPP suits get put on, there's no reason to not carry chemical weapons that are stronger than what your adversary is using. The adversary has already proven they believe their cause to be above the rules of armed conflict, so you better start carrying stronger and more deadly weapons into battle so that you can maintain an edge in the arms race.

Hopefully all of this stops at just CS gas. Unfortunately, we wrote out the rules of war because it's fairly predictable where this chain of combat ends.
