Russian Fagot Team Misses Supply Transport by a Mile

Published Sept. 13, 2022

Russian troops operating a 9K111 Fagot missile system attempt to destroy a van being used by Ukrainian forces to move supplies. They completely miss due to the limitations of the weapon system.

The 9K111 Fagot is a wire-guided missile system that is notoriously difficult to use against moving targets. In order to keep the weapon system on target, the operator must use a traversing and elevation wheel style system. For a static target, this is a fairly simple process. In fact, it's practically fire and forget, and is best used against non-moving targets or targets that will only move a small distance while the missile is en-route to the intended target.

Tracking a moving vehicle like we're seeing in this video is another story entirely. Let me simplify this. Imagine you're firing an ATGM at a target that is moving. If you're used to the TOW missile system, you're probably thinking you just need to keep the reticle on target by manually adjusting the aiming device. With the 9K111 Fagot, you're not doing that. You're aiming with an etch-a-sketch while tracking a target that's moving at a high rate of speed.
