(NSFW) Suspect Sneak Attacks NYPD With Knife, Gets Shot Close Range

This compilation of NYPD bodycam footage depicts officers responding to a call in which the suspect was threatening a family member with a knife. The suspect tries to stab an officer and is gunned down. While an edited version of this video is making the rounds on Twitter claiming an officer is stabbed in the back, the POV of other officers here shows how much a single camera can miss. Viewer discretion is advised.

Footage begins with the first officer's camera capturing the officers as they stage to both cut off escape routes for the suspect and leave routes open in case backup is needed. Although the depiction of the officer picking up a magazine at 0:14 may seem incongruous with what is occurring, the officers are actually trying to use a stack of them to keep a door open. We see this at 0:38. However, the scene goes from calm to chaos at 0:40. The suspect ambushes an officer from behind. From this angle, it appears as if he is trying to stab the officer in the back. However, the officer is unharmed.

The camera officer draws her TASER at 0:42, but by then another officer is already firing. The suspect backs the camera officer into the elevator, but two other officers are already inside. They fire repeatedly from the left and right of the camera officer, and the suspect goes down at 0:46. They keep firing well after he falls, because the weapon, a large kitchen knife, is shown to be still in the suspect's hand. At 0:56, the officers repeatedly call for the suspect to drop the knife.

At the 1:00 mark, we see the perspective change to another officer- the one with the magazines. At 01:38, we can see the suspect exit the stairwell behind the officers and begin his flanking attack on the officer in the middle of the hallway. He seems to change targets mid-swing and strike the camera-bearing officer as he retreats, also unharmed. By the time he recovers from the attack, the suspect is already downed. We then see the view of the officer to the left in the elevator. Although his view is largely occluded by the elevator panel, we can see the suspect making his approach at 02:39. Note how he fires over the officer trying to deploy her TASER. Lastly, we see the officer with the riot shield. He is intitally pushed back by the female officer as she retreats, but steps right to fire.

The suspect was pronounced dead at an area hospital. No one else, officers or otherwise, were harmed.
