Military Convoy Rolls Through IED Under Overpass

Footage from Iraq captures the moment a United States Army convoy rolls straight through an improvised explosive device attack as they go underneath of an overpass.

It's easy to look at this video through the crystal clear vision of hindsight and say that these Soldiers should have known better. It's easy to say because right before they go under the overpass, one of the Soldiers even makes a joke about how he expects they'll hit an IED going underneath of it. The reality of the situation is a bit different though. Let me explain.

In Iraq and Afghanistan the counter-IED fight was an every day occurrence. There was not a single operation done where the threat of hitting a roadside bomb wasn't present. The thing is, they were insanely easy to hide in trash, under dirt, and even in roadkill. All of these things were insanely plentiful in Iraq and Afghanistan. If Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen stopped at every suspected improvised explosive device throughout the GWoT, I suspect most of us would still be outside the wire right now waiting for EOD.

These guys just did what everyone else would have done. Sometimes you have to risk it to get the job done. After the detonation, they did exactly what their specific unit was supposed to do. Get off the X, break contact with the enemy, continue mission. I don't know the exact location this was filmed, but the unit was the 415th Military Intelligence Battalion.
