Ukrainian drone footage reportedly shows long range precision rocket or artillery strikes against Russian air defenses on Snake Island in the Black Sea. Ukraine claims to have destroyed a Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile system during the attack.

The exact nature of the strikes hasn't't been confirmed, but given the distance from the Ukrainian mainland to the island (approx. 35km), some on OSINT social media channels are suggesting it may have been the US-delivered M142 HIMARS or even the US-delivered M777 howitzers firing M982 Excalibur 155mm extended range guided artillery shells.

Snake Island presents itself as a strategically important position for the Russian forces as it allows them to extend their blanket of aerial defenses. However, they are paying a heavy price by trying to hold it as repeated Ukrainian strikes have targeted the island units as well as the naval vessels supporting it.
