Iranian Navy Vessel Attempts to Seize Oil Tanker, Strait of Hormuz

This video, initially released by the Pentagon, depicts an Iranian naval vessel attempting to interdict, and firing on, a civilian oil tanker. This action was recorded and reported by the U.S. 5th Fleet as having occurred on July 05, 2023.

At approximately 0100 local time near the Strait of Hormuz, an Iranian Navy vessel attempted to interdict and board an oil tanker- the TRF Moss, registered in the Marshall Islands. However, the US Navy Destroyer USS McFaul was dispatched to the scene, at which point the Iranians reportedly changed course. Three hours later, this footage of a separate attempted seizure occurs, as recorded by the McFaul's MQ-9 drone.

In the drone footage, a second Iranian craft attempts to seize the Richmond Voyager, which is registered out of the Bahamas and was bound for the United States, laden with oil at the time of reporting. As the Iranians approached, the Richmond Voyager sent out a distress call. The USS McFaul answered and arrived on scene, dispatching its drone. The resulting video shows rounds ricocheting off the Richmond Voyager. The ship was reportedly struck with a mix of small arms and crew-served weapons fire, resulting in minor damage near the crew living area, though no one was harmed.

There have been 20 internationally-flagged ships attacked, harassed, or seized by Iran since 2021.
