Drill Instructors Ambush Recruit on Firewatch

Hilarious footage recorded aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego captures the moment a group of Drill Instructors ambush an unsuspecting recruit on firewatch.

This video is literally older than time. I remember first seeing this video about 2 weeks before I left for boot camp 15 years ago in 2007, and even then the video was almost a year old. For those of you who haven't been to Marine Corps boot camp, let me set the stage. The recruit standing at the podium is on firewatch. Throughout the training day, recruits stand firewatch at their squad bay. For the most part, the recruits on firewatch during the actual training day are recruits that are SIQ or who have other obligations such as dental appointments that are preventing them from training.

As a recruit, you generally think to yourself that you're getting a skate day because all you have to do is make your appointments, and then stand firewatch while everyone else is out doing PT, getting classes, or hitting the parade deck for extra drill time. That's probably exactly what this kid was thinking, until every Drill Instructor in his company simultaneously showed up and decided to light him up for what appears to be absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Now, you're probably thinking to yourself, why light this kid up if he didn't do anything? And, well, the answer is simple. He missed the training day. All of his fellow recruits were out getting stronger and more proficient at being recruits while this kid was standing behind a podium doing a whole lot of nothing. That alone is a grave enough offense to warrant getting absolutely lit up by your Drill Instructors.
