Washington D.C. Officer Shoots Suspect After High Speed Pursuit

On July 30, 2022, an officer from the Washington D.C. Police Department was lead on a brief high-speed pursuit after getting behind a white sedan that was connected to a shooting at a nearby Autozone.

According to a 911 call with the Police Department, a 15 and 17-year-old were shot in an incident near the Autozone at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Longfellow Street. While responding to that call, the officer in this video, 17-year-veteran Sergeant Reinaldo Otero-Camacho, came up behind a white sedan that the shooters allegedly fled the scene in. After pulling behind the vehicle to attempt a traffic stop, the officer was immediately lead on a brief high speed pursuit that ended when the Sedan jumped a curb, disabling the vehicle.

Immediately upon stopping, four men got out of the vehicle and fled the scene. The officer responding drew his service pistol before exiting his vehicle and can be heard yelling "gun" several times before he discharges his duty pistol at one of the individuals, striking 31-year-old Kevin Hargraves-Shird in the back of the ear.

The officer then advanced on the suspect as other officers began to arrive on the scene. After a few seconds, the third officer on the scene clears the suspect and the officers begin attempting to render life-saving aid to Hargraves-Shird. Paramedics would arrive shortly after and transport him to a nearby medical facility where he would ultimately succumb to his injuries.

One pistol was recovered with Hargraves-Shird, and another three pistol were recovered at the scene of the first shooting involving the two juveniles. The family of Hargraves-Shird is disputing police claims, stating that they believe Hargraves-Shird was shot in the back of the head without warning, did not receive adequate life-saving aid in the immediate moments after the shooting, and that he was placed in an ambulance handcuffed after the shooting.

The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative leave while the situation is under investigation.
