Ukrainian Troops Defend Fighting Position From Russian Advance

Action camera footage released by an unknown group of Ukrainian troops captures a defensive firefight between Ukrainians and advancing Russian troops in a very well manicured forest.

The unfortunate reality of combat footage is that cameras cannot always perfectly capture the reality of a gunfight. Ranges are often skewed due to the compression of video files distorting the depth of field, and sound isn't always properly captured when it's recorded. It's important to remember that videos will always be a two-dimensional image of a three-dimensional space in time, and this video is a great example of that simple fact.

To the Ukrainians in this fight, they're fighting with Russian troops at a range of 300 to 400 yards. On camera, that translates to us looking at what appears to be Ukrainian troops fighting ghosts in the distance. The Ukrainian troops in their fighting position are firing in the general direction of a point of origin for the sounds of enemy gunfire, and small moving images of Russian troops. The camera itself is woefully unequipped to capture those images, and for anyone that's never been in a gunfight unfortunately that generally translates to a video like this appearing to be fake.

All of that said, I've been watching combat footage for almost a decade now, and I have the unfortunate experience of having lived through a decent number of real-world gunfights at around this range. The camera never truly does it justice and for years now I've been reading comments from people who think every firefight caught on camera is fake because it isn't always recorded at 10 meters with a clearly visible enemy force seen shooting at the guy wearing a camera.

Trust me when I tell you this simple fact. These guys aren't nearly as calm as they appear to be in this video. It's their training keeping them under control, not the physiological outputs of their body's flight or fight response.
