Turkey Wants To Control Kabul Airport With US Assistance After Afghan Withdraw

Published June 15, 2021

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his intentions to take over security and control of Kabul International Airport following the US withdrawal of Afghanistan and wants the US to foot the bill for the mission.

Turkey's tentative plan is a cooperative mission involving troops from Pakistan and Hungary to secure the airport as well as critical transportation routes across Afghanistan's capital city.

Erdogan also volunteered the US taxpayers to pay for the mission. "...the diplomatic, logistic and financial support that the United States will give us will be of great importance,” Erdogan said.

Considering Turkey's recent history of transporting hardline Islamist fighters into Libya, Azerbaijan, Iraq, and Syria... the idea of giving them the keys to an international airport in a country that has a history as an extremist haven and training ground... Well, you do the math.
