Ten Minutes of Tunnel Bomb Madness from Syria

A ten minute compilation of all the largest tunnel bombs detonated during the Syrian Civil War between 2013 and 2016. Almost all of this footage comes from the Free Syrian Army side of the conflict.

In 2016, I thought tunnel bombs would begin to replace the IED. Fortunately, I was wrong about that. Due to the amount of time and engineering experience required to successfully build a tunnel, these weapon systems never really saw use anywhere except for Syria. It's far easier to place a roadside bomb down or launch a black market ATGM at the enemy, so that's the way the tactics evolved, and we're probably better off for it judging from the effectiveness of the weapon systems in this footage.

The purpose of a tunnel bomb is to build a very large cache of explosives directly underneath of a target. Following the completion of the cache, a command detonation line is run through the tunnels to a safe distance and then detonated. In most cases, this can cause the collapse of the entire building above the tunnel or the complete destruction of enemy bases of operations.
