Suspect Points Gun at Multiple Officers and They Open Fire

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved-Shooting (OIS) that occurred in a valley community early Friday morning.

On January 29, 2021 around 11:07 a.m., LAPD, uniformed patrol officers, assigned to West Valley Division, received a radio call of an Assault with a Deadly Weapon at the 7000 Block of Aldea Avenue. The officers learned that the suspect, later identified as 42-year-old Luis Enriguez Jimenez, had arrived at the residence searching for his ex-girlfriend. During the incident, the suspect brandished a handgun and left the location in his vehicle after he was denied entry into the home. During their investigation, the officers received information that the suspect was possibly near a commercial parking lot located near the intersection of Havenhurst and Sherman Way. The officers conducted a follow up and found the suspect's parked vehicle. As the officers began giving commands to the suspect, he exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at them, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting. The suspect was struck by gunfire and was taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive. The suspect was booked for Attempt Murder on a Peace Officer, under Booking number 6115432.

A firearm was located at scene and recovered as evidence. Fortunately, no officers or innocent bystanders were injured during this incident.

LAPD's specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and interviewed witnesses. Forensic Science Division responded and collected evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the scene investigation.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD's policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office who responded to the scene will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officers(s) was reasonable.
