Soldier Hip Fires 60mm Mortar: Ouch

Published 11 months ago

Footage from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), America's war in Afghanistan, shows a bored mortar crew conducting unconventional weapons tests with their 60mm mortar system.

The weapon is seen with an M8 baseplate, which means it is configured to fire in "held-held" mode, by placing the plate on the ground and launching rounds with only one or zero charges and aiming by visual sight estimation rather than referencing off prepositioned aiming stakes. However, even with one or less charges, the mortar system still has significant recoil and for obvious reasons, shouldn't be hip fired as shown in the video. Had the tube not been slung across the soldier, it would have ripped out of his hands and skipped across the ground.
