Essentially, the Russians perform a probe of the Ukrainian position. They get close enough to determine exact location of the site for future artillery strikes, and they are also able to determine the relative size of the Ukrainian element defending the position. This activity suggests the Russian unit doesn't have a drone at their disposal, which could have more quickly gathered better intel without risking lives.
