Russian Spetsnaz Fighting In 2nd Chechen War (2000)

Footage from the Second Chechen War reportedly filmed by Aleksandr Sladkov in early 2000 shows Russian Spetsnaz battling it out with Islamist militants in the North Caucasus region.

On Oct 1, 1999, Russian troops stormed Chechnya to restore Russian federal control over territories claimed by Islamist separatists. The direct combat force-on-force fighting lasted until May 2000. However, the Russian military fought a prolonged counterinsurgency campaign until 2009. Eventually a relatively successful pro Russian Chechen government was installed, although Islamist terror attacks and Russian counterinsurgency raids are still ongoing across the region.
