Russian Pilot Talks About the Impact of Stinger Missiles

A Russian helicopter pilot discusses how the Mujahedeen's new-found asset in the stinger missile has impacted his daily operations in Afghanistan.

If you're familiar at all with the Russian occupation of Afghanistan in throughout the 80's then you probably already have a good understanding of what the term "Stinger Effect" means. Towards the end of that conflict, the America Central Intelligence Agency provided members of the Mujahedeen stinger missiles in an attempt to sway the tide of the conflict into the favor of the Afghan resistance fighters. Famously, this strategy worked out quite well.

This video was recorded after the stinger missile system hit the deck in Afghanistan and started dropping Russian pilots out of the sky at the cyclic rate. While it's easy to hate on the Russians for simply being Russian, and even easier to hate on the Mujahedeen because of what portions of the resistance eventually became, I still think this is an interesting video to watch. It's a rare human look at the impacts of conflict on the human psyche.
