Purse-snatcher Shoots At Cops, Provoking Mag Dump From Officer

Recent body camera footage released by the New Orleans Police Department, shows an officer involved shooting that occurred with an armed robbery suspect.


According to official reports, on the evening of February 8th, 2022, NOPD officers were searching the 2500 block of St. Louis Street, looking for a suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Daniel Castillo, who had just committed an armed robbery "purse-snatch" in the nearby area. Police say at approximately 8 p.m., Castillo held two female subjects at gunpoint in a church parking lot and demanding their belongings. Not only a few minutes after the incident occurred, NOPD officer Levi Atkin located Castillo in a row of bushes, where he immediately began commanding him to drop his weapon.


Castillo fired two shots at officer Atkin, provoking him to return fire with 17-shots. Castillo was shot two times in the leg and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. During later investigations, it was determined that Castillo's weapon malfunctioned, potentially saving officer Atkins life.


This incident is still under review and final charges have against Castillo have not yet been released.
