Police Setup Sniper Position To Neutralize Suspect Armed With A Handgun (NSFW)

On October 5th, 2021, officers from the Tucson Police Department responded to an active shooter incident at the 100 block of East Fort Lowell Road. Upon arriving in the area, officers observed the suspect, who was later identified as 23-year-old Donte Lorenzo Laster, entering a work yard, where he began firing shots randomly.

Additional officers arrived in the area and attempted to negotiate with Laster, however he continued ignoring officers commands. Holding the firearm to his head, the suspect continued to ignore commands while shouting erratically. Seconds after, Laster removed the gun from his head and discharged another round into the side of a building. As no progress was being made with negotiating, officers then began firing their service rifles, striking Laster. For the safety of surrounding residents, workers and officers, the threat level escalated and officers were forced to take action.

Laster was provided medical aid from responding officers until the Tucson Fire Department arrived on the scene. Laster was taken to an area hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries. This incident is still under investigation to help determine whether the officers were justified in the shooting.
