New body camera footage surfacing from the DeKalb Police Department (DPD), shows a critical incident which occurred on September 25th, 2021, that left a suspect dead after an intense officer involved shooting.

At approximately 0800 hours, DeKalb dispatch received reports of a suspicious man walking down the median of Interstate 20. Arriving on scene, a DPD officer offered the man, identified as 33-year-old Christian Smith, a ride to the nearest gas station. As the officer pulled into the gas station, a background check was conducted against Smith.

While conducting the background check, officers were informed that Smith had an active warrant for his arrest. In the footage provided, Smith, who was still located in the rear seat of the cruiser, un-detained, was approached by two officers. Both officers can be heard commanding Smith to maneuver toward their side of the vehicle so they can take him into custody.

In the matter of seconds, Smith drew a firearm where an officer involved shooting occurred. Smith and the officers exchanged multiple rounds, however; officers successfully overcame Smith and neutralized him. Officers successfully removed Smith from the vehicle and provided life-saving medical aid but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
