Published Oct. 17, 2021

On June 29th, 2021 at about 10:15 p.m., Phoenix Police officers responded to a residence in the area of 900 West Turney Avenue for an audible burglar alarm.

Officers arrived at the home and could hear the alarm ringing. The officers checked the perimeter of the residence and found the security door and inner front door partially open. They pushed the door open and illuminated the interior while knocking and announcing multiple times.

After several minutes of knocking and announcing their presence, the officers observed a man enter the front room from a back hallway armed with a gun. The officers told him repeatedly to drop the gun while they ran for cover. The man did not comply and fired out the door in the direction of the officers. Officers fired back at the man striking him, the man went back inside. The officers directed him to step out unarmed, which he did. He was provided first aid and was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries by Phoenix Fire Department personnel.

It was later learned the man was the homeowner. The homeowner was identified as 77-year-old Ernest Kaufmann. There were no injuries to officers or any other community members.
