(NSFW) Ohio State Troopers Chase and Stop Suicidal Murder Suspect

This compilation of dashcam and body-worn-camera footage from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) captures a use of force incident wherein their Troopers interdict a fleeing suspect wanted for murder in Chicago, incapacitating him with gunfire. He was transported to the hospital after this UoF incident.

Chicago Police Department tipped off OSP that 45-year-old Danny Berry, a suspect wanted in connection to a possible homicide in Chicago, was in their jurisdiction. This footage takes up from the point after which Berry has driven over spike strips with his vehicle. One of the OSP cruisers uses a PIT maneuver which forces Berry’s vehicle into the median. It is smoking, and over time becomes fully involved, at which point Berry exits the vehicle, pistol in hand. He begins to walk down the highway, with OSP following slowly. In the combined dash cams, we can see other units joining the response, including a K9.

At 04:31, Berry turns toward the police with his gun visibly pointed at his own head. While there is natural concern for Berry as a suicide risk at this point, it also creates a highly volatile and dangerous situation for responding law enforcement, as with a flick of his wrist, Berry can easily begin firing at them. Because of this, a trooper was ordered to take a shot when the opportunity arose, at 05:40 in this footage.

At 05:57, we transition to the shooter’s bodycam, and the same incident from other officers’ perspectives as they arrest Berry and provide the requisite medical care. As counter-intuitive as this may sound, while Berry was hospitalized with serious injuries, (owing to the crash and 5.56 round) he at least survived the incident rather than becoming a suicide.
