On August 10, 2022, members of the Sacramento Hostage Rescue Team were forced to shoot a man wielding a large samurai sword after he barricaded himself in a room holding his family hostage.

Above is the full critical incident report video put together by the Sacramento Police Department. The footage shows members of the Sacramento HRT unit moving into a home to execute a hostage rescue on a family being held hostage by Isaiah Gardner. The hostages were two small children and Gardner's wife.

Immediately after shooting Gardner and evacuating the hostages, members of the HRT unit provided Gardner with life-saving aid by applying a tourniquet to his leg. Gardner was then transported to a nearby medical facility. Gardner will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail after he is medically cleared for transport. He is facing charges of false imprisonment.
