(NSFW) Attempted Homicide Suspect Neutralized Point Blank By San Diego Officers

Shortly before 9 p.m. on July 23, 2021, dispatch received a call of a reported shooting at the 5900 block of University Avenue in the El Cerrito, San Diego, CA. Upon arriving at the scene, two officers spotted a 29-year-old man, suffering from a gunshot wound.

As ground officers handled the wounded victim, an SDPD helicopter was dispatched near the location of the shooting. Using eye witness descriptions, the helicopter was able to identify and locate the suspects car, where it was then pulled over less than a mile from the site of the shooting.

Within seconds after being pulled over, one suspect, later identified as 22-year-old Jesus Valeta exited the vehicle, beginning a foot chase with SDPD officers. The footage provided, captures both perspectives, both aerial and ground interactions with the suspect. After a lengthy foot chase, officers caught up to Valeta, after he tripped and stumbled onto the ground. Attempting to stand back up, Valeta was still armed with a firearm. Refusing to drop the weapon, SDPD officers began taking multiple shots, striking Valeta.

Since the shooting occurred, this footage has received a lot of controversy, arguing that Valeta was putting his hands up to surrender. After ignoring over a dozen officer commands, fleeing the scene of an attempted homicide, and openly carrying a firearm, officers made the split second decision to neutralize Valeta before any further damage was done.

Valeta was provided medical aid until medical transport arrived on the scene. Valeta was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Along with Valeta, the three other individuals in the car during the traffic stop, were detained and identified as Cesar Wojcik Ramirez, 20, Angelo D’Shaun Shaw, 23, and Zachariah Villalva, 22. They have been jailed for suspicion of murder, Valeta's death, robbery, firearm assault, and criminal conspiracy. As for the 29-year-old victim, he has not been identified, but was last reported in stable condition.
