Officer body camera footage released from the San Jose Police Department, shows the moments multiple law enforcement agencies shot and killed a wanted man, who at the time had outstanding weapon violations and connections to a homicide in early January.
On January 21st, 2021, multiple law enforcement agencies conducting a group effort investigation, surrounded the Villa Fairlane Apartment Complex, in hopes of locating 27-year-old David Tovar Jr. As shown in the body camera footage, officers established a perimeter around the apartment complex, where after a short while, Tovar emerged.
Officers commanded Tovar to put his hands up; however he disregarded these commands and continued fleeing on foot. While Tovar ran by, one officer reportedly observed, what he thought was a handgun, in Tovar's pocket. In response, multiple officers discharged their service rifles, striking Tovar and neutralizing him. According to official reports, Tovar was the primary suspect in the homicide of a 35-year-old Paicines resident on January the 3rd.
Tovar was rendered on-site medical aid until he was transported to an area hospital. Tovar succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
