While it's unclear what the mugger's intentions were at the time of the attack, the intentions of the mother are loud and clear throughout the duration of the recording. Of course, there are exceptions to this, such as when you're dealing with organized criminals conducting a serious heist, but the with a lot of crimes of opportunity you'll see that it only takes a little bit of resistance to stop the attacker from trying to take you as his easiest avenue of approach to a quick payday.

Thieves, muggers, and common criminals are generally operating off of a base level instinct. At the bottom of that instinct is taking the path of least resistance. Just like taking a trail on patrol in Vietnam instead of breaking brush, it seems like a good idea until it's not. It's always been human nature to take the easiest path, and common criminals are doing that, but for a quick payday. Once they find out there's an ambush on the trail of life they're walking down in the form of someone who refuses to be a victim, they generally do exactly what you're seeing in this video. They retreat and move on.
