Officers from the LAPD Southwest Patrol Division responded to a radio report of a "Assault with a Deadly Weapon" in the area of 40th Place and Vermont Avenue on January 27, 2021, around 10:30 p.m.
The perpetrator, later identified as Randy Miller, 55, was called in by a 75-year-old local resident. Minutes before the call came into dispatch, the 75-year-old man had been assaulted by Miller. Miller had allegedly punched him in the face, breaking his nose and teeth. After assaulting the old man, Miller armed himself with a knife and began assaulting his girlfriend across the street from the apartment building.
Two responding Officers arrived on the scene, locating Miller lying on top of the female suspect. The Officers then drew their firearms, as one noticed Miller swinging a knife in a striking motion. To protect the victims life, Officers began taking precise shots at Miller to prevent him from causing more harm to the victim.
After the shooting occurred, Officers removed Miller off the victim and provided medical aid until medical transport would arrive. Miller no longer had a pulse and succumbed to his gunshot wounds on the scene.
