Haitian President Assassinated At Home By Hit Squad

Correction: In our mobile app push notification it was stated that this was footage of the hit squad after the attack, when this is more likely the security team responding after the attack.

Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated overnight at his residence by an unidentified hit squad, and his wife was also wounded in the attack.

Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph declared a state of emergency, and the US embassy was closed due to the deteriorating security situation. Haiti is in the midst of an ongoing humanitarian crisis as food shortages and poverty have resulted in escalated gang violence and political unrest.

Reports indicate that several gunmen stormed the president's private residence, and witness video shows some of the incident, likely the security response to the assassination. It was also reported that the attackers were speaking Spanish, which is significant as the primary languages in Haiti are French-based Haitian Creole and formal French. The president's wife, 53-year-old Martine Moise, was also shot in the attack, and is now receiving medical treatment. The specifics of her injuries were not released.
