As a so-far successful military coup unfolded in the west African nation of Guinea in early September 2021, an interesting video surfaced on social media showing at least three armed and fully kitted US Army Green Berets attempting to navigate a vehicle through an excited mob of Guineans in the capital city of Conakry.

The US troops are seen with an entourage of local soldiers, providing additional security and assisting them with their movement. The mob, although chaotic in nature, doesn't appear threatening as they chant "Liberty," likely in support of the coup.

The video caused instant assertions that the US military was behind the ongoing coup. United States Africa Command, or AFRICOM, was quick to dispel those accusations, claiming the Special Forces soldiers just happened to be there on a training mission, which had to be cancelled because of the unexpected military insurrection.

“The U.S. government and military are not involved in this apparent military seizure of power in any way,” AFRICOM said. “The United States strongly condemns these actions in Guinea and any attempts at forceful seizures of power or unconstitutional actions.”
