A massive fiery explosion occurred after a reported missile strike at a Turkish proxy militia controlled checkpoint near Jarabulus, Syria on Mar. 5, 2021

The strike targeted an oil refinery area, so the massive fiery explosion in the video is a result of massive quantities of oil igniting by the missile blast. Aftermath footage shows the booster component of the munition, identifying it as a Soviet-developed SS-21 "Tochka" (NATO: Scarab) 9M79 short range ballistic missile or OTR-21.

Those responsible for the attack have not taken credit, although fighting between the Russian/Syrian coalition and Turkish-backed militants has escalated over recent weeks. Local Kurdish groups are also at odds with the Turkish-backed militias, but it is unlikely that the Kurds would be using the Tochka missile system.

Current reports of casualties differ greatly, but it seems likely that both deaths and injuries resulted from the incident.
