Freedom of Russia Legion in Contact During Cross-Border Raid

Members of the Freedom of Russia Legion take cover during a firefight in Novaya Tavolzhanka, Belgorod Oblast. The footage appears to be from a body cam and shows three legionnaires taking cover behind a brick wall. One wonders how long that brick can provide protection from return fire.

The Freedom of Russia Legion is an all-Russian unit fighting under the direction of Ukraine’s international legion. They are one of two groups claiming responsibility for an increasing number of raids into Russian territory. A raid, by definition, includes a planned withdrawal, so despite the claims of liberating Russia, or establishing an independent republic in Belgorod Oblast, the incursions are likely designed to disrupt operations in the Russian rear and divert units that might otherwise face the impending Ukrainian counter-offensive.

In addition to an immediate operational effect, these attacks into Russian territory have the potential to influence the strategic picture, although opinions diverge as to the ultimate outcome. Some claim that these attacks will shatter the Russian sense of security and erode support for Putin’s regime, while others fear a tangible threat will unify the Russian people against a common enemy. Regardless, these forays into Russia are indicative of a new chapter in the conflict.
