On October 15th, 2021, Milpitas Police Detectives initiated an enforcement stop of a stolen vehicle that was parked in the Milpitas Square shopping center located at the 400-block of Barber Lane.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., detectives approached the stolen vehicle, where a 42-year-old man emerged armed with a gun and immediately began firing at the detectives. A Detective then fired his weapon at the man. As shown in the body worn camera and surveillance footage, an exchange of gunfire then occurred between the man and four detectives.

After about four minutes of exchanging rounds, responding detectives overcame the suspect with gunfire and neutralized the man from causing any further harm. The man was rendered medical aid until medical transport arrived on the scene. He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Four days later, the suspect passed away from injuries on October 19th, 2021.

No law enforcement officers or civilians were injured during this incident.
