Florida Car Thief Ends Chase By Going Feet-Wet

This footage, provided by the Florida Highway Patrol in Miami-Dade County, shows a woman who has stolen a car from a local dealership. She leads the FHP on a fairly harrowing chase through a high-traffic area before crashing, whereupon she continues to evade by jumping into a lake.

Of all the cars to steal, given a low probability of success, I question the Honda Civic as a choice. But there's no accounting for taste. It's worth noting that like many incidents which make Floridians appear to be couillons, the culprit is actually an out-of-towner: in this case, Melina Logan, 27, is from North Carolina. Her motive for stealing the car from the dealership after a test drive remains unclear. But she reaches speeds of up to 90 miles per hour as she leads FHP along the shoulder and in between traffic on the Palmetto Expressway. She causes damage to the stolen vehicle, FHP pursuit, and bystander vehicles before crashing at 0:40.

Showing exemplary dedication to escape and evasion, she bails out into the lake. However, just because she perceives it as her only option doesn't make it a smart one. She was caught shortly thereafter and I'd love to see the body camera footage for her apprehension. She is charged with a further two counts of battery on a LEO, in addtion to fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash, and resisting arrest, in addition to the obvious grand theft. One bystander was hospitalized.
