Engagement Between Ukrainian and Russians Near Donbas

Footage recorded from the Ukrainian perspective in Donbas shows an engagement between Russian and Ukrainian forces. While the video is short, it appears the Russians are making an advance here.

Here's my best guess at what's going on in this video. We know that the footage was recorded in Donbas, and we know that it's taken from the Ukrainian perspective. We also know that the Ukrainians are in fighting positions, and are firing at targets that don't appear to be too incredibly far from their position. At the end of the video, we also see the Ukrainians get up in what appears to be some sort of tactical withdrawal.

Most likely what we're seeing is Russian forces advancing on the Ukrainian positions. The tactical withdrawal is not a retreat, however it's a decisive defensive maneuver to pull back to supplementary and alternate fighting positions. With this withdrawal, the Ukrainians are able to pull the Russians back further into their defense in depth, which will allow them to continue to engage with them from a superior position.

In this way, even though it may not appear like it, the Ukrainians are maintaining the tactical advantage of being in the defense while the Russian troops are being forced to advance on hardened positions. With that in mind, it doesn't really matter what level the Russian troops are. They can be conscripts with little to no training, or they can Spetsnaz hard chargers with millions in training invested into them. Regardless, they're going to meet the same fate advancing on hardened positions from anyone with basic marksmanship experience and training.
