Drone Footage From 2022 Shows a Hellscape From 1916

Video from Donetsk captures a Hellscape that looks like it could come straight out of images in a history book discussing World War One at length.

The current problem in Ukraine for both sides of the conflict is that neither side has been able to establish firm air superiority. Current warfare tactics heavily rely on air superiority being able to dominate the enemy which in turns sets conditions for infantry and armor to advance at a cyclic pace. With neither side being able to set conditions for air superiority however, what we're seeing is a complete de-evolution in modern warfare.

Similar to how chemical and automatic weapons changed the face of war during the First World War, what we're seeing now is two militaries crippled by over the horizon warfighting capabilities. As a result of that, we're seeing both sides dig in trenches to protect their infantry while they try to establish fire superiority through lobbing unguided rockets from rotary wing aircraft and constant artillery fires.

Right now, for both sides, the purpose of the defense is to set better conditions for the offense. It's going to take an innovative commander to design an entirely new style of warfare for us to see any true developments in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine right now. Whichever side is willing to take the most risks to learn the lessons of this new style of conflict in blood will most likely be the side that starts taking ground from their enemy the fastest.

Whichever side takes the initiative and gains momentum at this point will likely win the conflict outright without any outside interference.
