Footage from Mesa PD shows an Aug. 22, 2022 incident in which an armed burglary suspect attempted to hide from pursuing officers in an apartment laundry room. The SWAT team deployed a robot and a drone to pinpoint the suspect's location. Police then used a loudspeaker system to call the man, identified as Abdul Basit Ishan, out from his hiding spot, but he refused until tear gas was deployed.

He dropped the gun before attempting to surrender to the police, but apparently one of the officers thought Ishan was grabbing a weapon from his waistline as he stepped out of the laundry room, resulting in an officer involved shooting. Ishan was treated for his gunshot wound and charged with multiple felonies.
